H1 visa extension after 5 and half year

My current H1 visa is expiring in December 2005. I came to US in August 2000.
That leaves approximately 7 months for full six years.

I have filed for LC in NJ in Sept.2002 and in confusion now whether to continue with that or file newly through PERM.

Anyhow I have to apply for for my H1 extension later this year. When I do so will I get for just 7 months or will I get one year extension. :confused:

Please advise.
