Hi Folks,
This is a great forum and I hope I get some assistance here.
1. I started my Masters program in Fall 2001
2. My grades/GPA were very good and had no other problems.
3. In the last semester i.e. Fall 2003 I required to take-up
2 graduate-level courses in order to complete the course-work
requirement.
4. I registered for two grad-level course and a third undergrad-level course.
5. Towards mid/end of semester (Fall 2003), I dropped the undergrad course as I wasnt doing well on that, and also it wasnt required for my graduation.
However, this made me fall below the required number of credit hours
per semester (which was 9 hours).
6. Consequently I was told to have become out-of-status by our international
student advisor. She said I was no more eligible for Optional Practical Training
(OPT).
7. Therefore, I enrolled for PhD, starting Spring 2004.
8. I took my final exams (for M.S.) in Feb2004, completed all M.S. degree
requirements.
9. I was issued a new PhD I-20 form. I was advised by my international
student advisor to go to India and reenter US in order to "activate" this
new I-20 (because I was out-of-status).
10. I came to India in March 2004 after informing school authorities.
However I got a good job here and decided to quit the PhD program.
I informed school authorities regarding this change of plans over email.
11.Recently as a part of my current job in India, I was issued an H1 visa.
However, the visa officer asked me to be prepared for a possible "questioning"
at U.S. port of entry. She asked me to carry all required documents
like I-20, M.S. Degree etc.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
JMS
