H1 to L1 transfer timing issue

I'm on a H1 visa and have about 8 months left to complete my 6 years. I work a major Indian company and recently joined them (3 months back). Could I convert my H1 to L1? Would the 6 year limitation still apply? All I need is a visa to continue my status for another 6 months after my H1 expires, by which time, I would be having my EAD thru my spouse.
