H1 to H4

My Wife switched from H4 to H1B in March 2001. She worked for a couple of months, has been on bench since July 2001. We did not know and did not apply for her H1 to H4 since then. Lawyer tells me this is pretty complicated now as she is out of status and should leave the Country asap. Could someone please advice what can be done in such a case?

Any information is greatly appreciated.
 
This is a difficult situation, and the course of action would depend on when the I-94 expires/expired, did the company cancel the H1 etc. Probably may have to leave the US. Perhaps consult another attorney for independent advice.
