H1 to F1
Hi Sujana,
Being on F1 status means that you have to be a full-time
student. This means that you have to get admission to a
under-graduate or graduate program (perhaps community
colleges are fine too,.... not sure here). Once you get admission, the college will issue an I-20 form (of admission).
You use this I-20 to apply for a student visa. Normally you have
to leave the country and go to US embassy (in Mexicao/
Canada/India) and get an F-1 visa and get on F-1 status.
I believe there is a way to change your visa status without leaving US, but that takes a long time (if the process still exists) - about 4 years ago, it took about 3-4 months.
There is one other issue here: getting admission to a univ. itself is a long process taking months sometimes....not sure if this info. helps.

P.S: Getting a job will not make it easier to get onto F1.To
the extent I know, the only condition to be on F1 status
is to be registered for full course load (20 credit-hours for a
graduate program for most universities).
