H1 Getting Terminated - Need Options

(I am writing this mail on somebody\'s behalf). Here is the situation - The company went belly up and has agreed to pay until Feb \'02 end at which point the company will close and inform the INS about the termination of H1 visa. What are the options at this point besides the obvious one of finding another job? He already has a valid Business Visa which he used some time back. But then he came to US on H1. The dates on Business Visa are valid for several years. Can he go back to Business Visa while staying in US? How about F-1 Visa if he can find an admission somewhere? What is the best course of action if nothing else works out until Feb? How long can he stay without getting into any trouble with INS? In this economy, I am sure there are several people who have faced this situation. I will appreciate any advice or stories regarding this issue.
Thanks,

For any sort of status change he has to file a I-539 which itself takes close to three months to be approved if not more...So he got to act now to be in status after his last paycheck. He could argue that since the application is at INS after that date he could be considered to be in status pending adjudication; but I would rather try to act fast on these issues. Moreover there are no grace periods as of now and each day of overstay of visa counts these days...and he better not do that in these days of heightened security.

what about H1 visa portability?

In case form i-539 is used, and if a job is found before current job expires, can the current H1 be transferred to new Job, or a new H1 will need to be applied for?

I am in same boat. Another option is getting a visit visa. My friend applied for this and he is allowed to legally stay here for 3 months and my guess is he is planning for a transfer if he gets another job.

or find someone to transfer ur visa.
