H1->F1 general question

Hi all,

I am currently on an H1 and intend to remain in that status as long as I have my job.

I am going to start an MS program in a univ towards the end of this month part time (3 units only).

Besides the purpose of doing further studies while working, I also wanted to be able to switch to my MS program fulltime should I be let go from my current job.

Is a transfer to F1 visa possible in this case. (BTW, I originally came to the US on an F1 visa and switched to H1 since.)
Please offer any suggestions/ideas as to how to make the switch.

Thanks in anticipation of any answers.

I believe you can change to F1 status as long as the school is willing to issue you an I-20, which would depend on the number of units you register etc. Check with the school. The form you file is I-539, which can be obtained at: www.ins.gov, and click on "forms and fees", and scroll down to I-539 (application to extend/change nonimmigrant status). The instructions for this form also contains some useful information.
