H1- F1 conversion

Hi, I have a different situation. I came to US on F-1 and later converted to H1-B after I obtained my MS. I have been on H1-B for two years now. Last september my company laid me off and I took another job for which H1-B transfer has been filed. I am currently working as a consultant with that company. I am always looking around for good Ph.D. program and I got Ph.D. admission with full assistanceship in a top 5 school. Now I want to resign for the job and go and get F-1 from India (because of the lengthy process and time it takes to convert from H1- F1). Meanwhile, My employer received a request for more information or a querry on my application. I never filed for a green card or any such thing. I am concerned that if this querry business affects me in any way when I go to my home country to get F-1?

What are the required documents in US consulate in India in this situation?
 
- Can you tell me how long it will take to transfer H1 to F1 from California center? Do you know if I can take courses and/ or receive scholarship during F1 pending period? Thanks!
 
the estimated time for H1-F1 transfer is about 6 months. You can take courses while this is being done. but you will not be able to receive any full-time student benifits until you have a F-1 status. full time student benefits are tuition waiver/graduate assistanceship etc.
