H1 - F1 Change of Status help

Another question regarding the start date of the new status. Say I filed the COS application on May ,1 2003 and continue working and got the approval on July,1,2003. What is the approved I-94 card shows a starting date for the new status as May,1,2003? Then since I worked before the approval (after May,1), am I deemed working illegally?

Can you specify a starting date for your new status on the COS application?
 
Your status will be H1 until the INS approves the COS to F1. You can work until that, and must stop once the approval comes through. Not legal advice.
