H1 extension delayed

Hi,

I am working in H1 visa. During last year when my visa is about to expire my attorney applied for extension in regular. USCIS was taken long time to respond. During this time my employer applied for Labor approval to my Green Card.

USCIS did not respond for 2 or 3 months, then we converted my my H1 extension into premium and got the approval.

I was staying in USA and working with client though i did not receive H1 extension receipt number because it was in regular. I asked many times my attorney as staying/working in USA without a receipt number is not authorized. But my attorney confidently replies always as "USCIS has received your extension application and it is in processing but due to more applications at USCIS they are taking time to send receipt number. I am sure you are authorized to work here."

Now my doubt is staying/working in USA with expired visa and not having receipt number but applied for extension is valid or out of status?

One thing i should mention here is though i don't have any proofs as i applied on time but finally my extension visa came through and all visa dates are correct dates with continuous there is no gap in visa extensions.

Please help me on this.
