H1-B visa stamping - Sailing permit reqd??

Hi, I heard that its good to have sailing permit when you leave the US.I will be going to India for my H1-B stamping soon. Any ideas on if its compulsory?

Not at all ...

I never even heard anyone mention it until now in case of a Visa issuance, or coming back into the US. I just got back from India 3 days back after getting my H-1B Visa renewed, and nobody even thinks about a sailing permit while coming back.

Hi all,

Just a clarification - sailing permit is something u need at the point of departure, not arrival. It is to show that you dont owe the govt anything interms of taxes and ur taxes re paid in full. Infact its a good idea for all non-immigrants, not just those going for stamping, to have sailing permit (Refer Pub 519 - chapter 11of the IRS). I wanted to know since I am leaving for India very soon
