H1-B to Green Card

I'm quite new to this forum, but I'd like to know how soon into H1-B can one apply for Green Card.

I actually just got my H1-B approval, I'm just wondering how things work.

Thanks.

Since H1 is a 'Dual Intent' visa, you can start right away. I would even advise to do it right away - or more precisely, ask your employer to do it right away - since some Congress members have plans to remove 'Dual Intent' from H1 and no longer allow H1 to GC 'transitions'.

A little clarification is required here, Please

Like I said in my original post, my H1-B just got approved and it's effective October 1, 2007. I however start work in August 2007 with OPT.

What is the procedure? Do I have to contract an attorney or talk to my employer?

You personally can't do anything. Your employer - or the employers attorney - must file for a 'Labor Certification' for you. So you can only ask your employer to do so. If you're an outstanding researcher you can try an immigration petition yourself - but that's very tough.
