H1-B Stamping issue - PLZ PLZ PLZ HELP!!!!

Hello All,
This is my first post. I just joined immigrationportal recently.
I HAVE A VERY BIG ISSUE. PLZ HELP.
I came here on a F1 visa and while in school I played a prank by involving in a shoplifting for $7 and was convicted. I know it's a terrible mistake which is costing me so much. I pleaded guilty, paid $100 fine to the court, paid the store fine and was on probation for 1 year. They let me go. This happened in Illinois, 2003 December. Expect that misdemeanor, my record is clean.

Sometime back my employer applied for my H1 and it got approved(he is not aware of this). I booked my date for H1 stamping in Canada and had to cancel as in the application DS -156 there is something where we need to check it as 'Yes' or 'No'. It says, if you were ever convicted or arrested or given a pardon please check it as 'Yes'. If I check it as 'Yes', many people told me the consular will surely deny my stamping and I have to go back to my home country. I cancelled my date. I have done rigorous research on internet and see different views from everybody. I spoke to an attorney and he says, I should not go for stamping till I get my Greencard(which sounds horrible).

What should I do now. I don't want to answer it as 'No' because later they will find out at the time of GC processing. I AM HELPLESS. Not able to concentrate on work, feel like going into depression, feel like killing myself sometimes.

What are the chances of me getting the H-1B stamping. Did anybody face a similar situation.

Sorry if I posted this issue in the wrong Forum. KINDLY PLEASE SUGGEST.
