H1-B for University

I have H1-B status from my current employer (a company). I would like
to go back to university and work as a post doctoral researcher.
I would not be working for my present company any longer
but would be working for the university. Is that possible ?
Can I work part time ( I would like to be on H1-B but work only 20 hours per week. Remaining 20 hours I will not be employed by anyone)? Is there any restriction on the minimum pay I have to receive from the university? Can I use H-1B portability provision?
Thanks for your help.

Yes, you must be paid at least prevailing wage for the position for the hours that you work. Since you are currently employed by your H-1 sponsor, you can use the H-1 portabilty provisions of AC21. This seems possible based on the information that you provided.

H1-B transfer

Thanks for the information. How can I find the prevailing wages in my research area (communication systems- electrical engineering) ? My advisor is ready to support me. He asked me to find out about the minimum wage. Geographically, the university is located
in Southern California (San Diego county) and my monthly salary would be around $2900.
Thanks again.
