H1-B expiration on ead usage

I recently got my ead in the mail. I'm currently on H1-B with my sponsor for gc. If I want to do some business on the side to earn some extra cash and in the process use my ead, does that expire my H1 status and put me on ead status? Does that mean that I cannot use my H1-B status to travel and have to wait for my advance Parole to come to travel? Any clarification on my confusion will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
 
If I use my EAD card for side business, do I need to inform my current employer who is sponsoring my Green Card and who is also the sponsorer of my current H1-B? Using my EAD card would put me on EAD status and will expire my current H1-B status. But, how does current employer and INS know about that? Do I need to do any paperwork with current employer or it really does not matter? Thanks for any help on this.
