Hello everyone,

I am a H-1B visa holder, my wife just arrived at US several days ago, we are living in massachusetts. We went to the local social security office to apply for a social security number for her, but her application was denied, and we were told because she is a H-4 visa(depedent visa), she can't has a social security number. But if she can't has a social security number, can she get a health insurance?(my insurance can cover her), can she get a driver lisense, can she take classes at university? And I heard now if a H-4 wants to change to a F-1, he(she) has to apply a F-1 outside of US, is this true?

Any info is helpful, thank you in advance.....

Hi!

your wife can get health insurance, she can get a driver's license too- u will have to get a Denial letter from Social secuirty office, stating that she doesnt have SSN, she will be given driving test dates immediately then.
She can study on H$.
if u want to convert it to F!, u dont have to go outside US, just ask school for I-20 & send to US consulate .

Is H-4 going to school will affect I-485?

Thanks for your reply. So do you think my wife(with H4 visa) can go to university and register in degree program without any problem just like a F-1 student? We will file I-485 very soon, is my wife going school under H-4 will affect our green card process?

Thank you in advance.....

Hi!

Your wife should study on H4, as u r filing I-485, she cannot file for F1, as it will get rejected , due to interest in staying as a resident.

She will not benefits of F1, like she cannot accept any research assistanship, she cannot work on campus & she will not be given OPT(work permit) -given to F1 students after completeing her degree.

But, u have no other choice other than to pursue on H4, as u r about to file your I-485.studying on H4 will not affect I-485.
