I landed in canada as a permanent resident on 18 aug. 2001.
I lost my job in US and wants to return back to Canada.
Will I have any problems getting back in Canada?
Do I have to apply for returning resident permit?

As per the new rule you should be OK. But you should hurry up.
You probably have until August 17 (you landed Aug18, 2001) to reenter. Call CIC, they will give you more accurate info.

Good luck!!!

Surrendering I-94

Hi,

My I-94 expires by the end of Sept ’03 and planning to move to Canada for good. (holding PR for over 3 years) Planning to go through Windsor tunnel in my friends car and want to surrender my I-94 before leaving. In my previous visits through the tunnel, I noticed there’s a booth at the entrance where you just pay the toll and go to Canadian side, I am not sure if we can hand over the I-94 to the person over there or hand it over at the Canadian side. Can someone clarify on that?

What if I just pass by without surrendering the I-94? Do BCIS consider that I continue to stay illegally??

Appreciate the takers! Guess Dimple2001 should know it well>>

You would be better off surrendering the I-94.

Well before you enter the tunnel toll booth just after making the curve around the Old Mariners Church, you will see a small board on your left in red letters saying something like "Standing Lane" for Special Registration, Departure Reporting, etc.

You can park on that lane, get down, walk over to the Immigration office which is to your left way past the customs office. There you can surrender your I94. The customs officers will also be able to direct you to the immigration office (its sort of hidden from view).

The toll booth people have nothing to do with immigration and will not accept anything (other than the toll:)).
