RFE for Birth Certificate

An RFE is being issued for Birth Certificate. The RFE says if the birth certificate not available provide a statement from the authorities in India verifying that document is not available & the birth was not registered. Do we need to get this certificate only from place I was born or any local authority can issue it. The reason I am asking this because the place where I am born is far from where my family lives and it is very tough for my family member to get the Birth Certificate!

Thanks

I think a copy from the Embassy should suffice. not sure on that .. if not the local govt office where your family lives should be able to issue you a birth cert.

But my family does not live the same place where I was born.. Is it possible can I parents register my birth at different place based on the hospital record.. I have a hospital record which states a baby boy is to both(my parents name) on such date and time.. Can that be the substitute for the birth Certificate

manjit, does the hospital record have YOUR name on it? If it does, I would say that the hospital record is a pretty good substitute for the birth record.

Nope it does not have my name on it.. because as in India all of us know the official name is kept after 15 to 20 days after the birth of child.
If that is good enough, can I have affidavit from my mother and also attach the high School mark sheet which states the birth date

Manjit,

I think there is a certificate called as the college leaving certificate.. do you have that?? that is another evidence of a birth cert.. thats what they follow in Maharashtra state any way

Ok so heres the deal. You need an official document (school, college, church, gurdwara, government) that has the following:

1) Your birth name (name change form if current name different from birth name)
2) Your date of birth
3) Your place of birth (city/state or city/country)
4) both Your parents' names

These 4 are the primary components and should be a part of any document that is to be used as a birth record. None of those 4 items should be missing.

Also look at some INS forms. They have some information on it. For example look at the I-130 :

http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/formsfee/forms/files/i-130.pdf

Look under 9. What if a document is not available?
