Greencard after spouse lands in US on marriage petition

Hi - I am US citizen and applied for my husband few months ago; he landed here two weeks ago with an immigrant visa on his Indian Passport; the VISA stamp also states that it serves as temporary I-551 for one year. I want to know how long it takes to get actual greencard? Do we need to apply for it separately or USCIS mails it out once a person lands here in US?
