Green card will run out after I leave the country (advice needed)

Hi All,

I have been in the USA for close to 12 years now. I was given permanent residency back in 1996 and this will need to be renewed next year.

My dilemma is this...

My father back in the UK has not been very well recently, and it looks like I may well have to move back to the UK for a few years to help out with his care, and help keep an eye on him, etc.

I was planning on applying for my US citizenship, but due to this issue, along with the fact that I was out of the country traveling (for leisure) for too long, means that this is not possible.

So, if I have to temporarily move back to the UK, but my green card is not due to run out for about 9 months, what are my options?
I obviously do not want to loose my residency status, but don't know what to do about the renewal. I have always while here, been working, never got a criminal conviction, never claimed social security, etc

Thanks for any advice you may be able to offer.

Lam.

Apply for GC renewal and also for re-entry permit.

Re-entry permit will help you to re-enter US after staying close to 2 years away from US. Hopefully this period is sufficient for you to take care of things in UK.

Renewal.

Thanks Apollo for the quick response. My dilema is that my card runs out next October and as I understand things, I am only able to apply for a new card within 6 months of that date.
So, if I have to leave early in the year or maybe even sooner, then I will not be in the USA when I need to send in the renewal. I do not think they allow you to renew this further out than 6 months.

What do you think?

Thanks again for you advice.

Lam :)
