My job might send my to Russia for about 9 months at a time for a 4 year project that will start in Dec 2004.

How long can a Green Card holder legally stay outside the U.S.?

I had heard that it is a maximum of 6 months. Is this true?

What would happen if one exceeds this duration. Will the Green Card be cancelled?

How does this affect the 5 year wait for Citizenship?

The max length of stay is 1 year, you can apply for a one time extension after that (with justifications). If you stay is beyond 1 year you lose your GC.

No

If you can prove that you work for US company, pay US taxes and file taxes and say that you are out of country on business trip, you probably doesnot fall under the one year category or the two year re entry permit. Talk you a lawyer.. There is some thing you can work out
