Green Card in process but just got accepted into top MBA program

Doing some research for a friend. His employer is in the process of applying for the green card. The labor certification is complete and moving onto the next stage. He just found out he got accepted into one of the top MBA programs in the country and cannot pass up the opportunity to go to a top school.

His employer is a Big consulting firm and he's confident they will support him in any way they can. The company probably would have just filed by the time he's set to start grad school. He's from a small African country so the processing for green card should be within a year.
1. Can his employer continue with the green card process even if he leaves and goes to grad school?
2. What status would he be if he decided to go to school?

Thanks!

Couple of points.. first, your friend should create a free account here so we don't confuse your posts with his. Second, the big consulting firm should have a legal team with lawyers that your friend should go to for legal guidance. They're the best judge insofar as what the company expects of their international employees.
