Green Card holder travelling to Venezuela

Good day everyone,

I am Venezuelan Citizen who came to the US and applied for political asylum. I was granted the asylum and now, several years later, I am a Green Card Holder. I would like to visit my parents, but I'm afraid I will need additional documents to come back to my home in the USA. I read the forum discussions and people mentioned about NP which I don't know what it means.

Questions:

1) Do I need to get a permit to re-enter the US, form I-327 ? Yes / No ?

2) What is NP ?

3) When I re-enter the US, will the Immigration Officer at the airport ask me about my Green Card origin ? Should I tell it is from political asylum? What do I say if he/she asks me that question ?

I'm afraid that if I got political asylum from Venezuela, and now I am travelling to Venezuela, the officer may give me trouble. Is this the case ? What do I say ?????

You help will be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Carlos Lijeron.

Hello, I'm also a Venezuelan citizen and GC holder.

1. Asylees or GC holders through asylum need to apply for a Refugee Travel Document (RTD) Form I-131.

2. NP stands for National Passport and if yours is not expired yet, you can use it to go out of US.

3. Your green card already has a code that shows you got it through asylum. Immigration Officer (IO) will know.

Now, honestly...

I would explore other ways to see your parents. Some reasons:

1. In Venezuela, you need to show your NP. You don't want to show RTD at Maiquetía airport, since that is the main port of entry of Country of Persecution (COP). If your NP is expired, you can renew it at a consulate (not any but the one government assigned depends on your city), but many people suggest that is a bad choice for other reason.

2. IO will know that your plane came from you COP. He/she can send you to a immigration court or not, is completely random.

3. But if nothing happens there or if you go through a 3rd country, IO at the citizenship interview will ask why you traveled to COP, specially now that political situation is worse with US. Also, he/she will inquire about NP renovation reason and will see Venezuela Onidex stamps on it.

4. Try to bring your parents here. If they don't have a visa or can't travel to US for any other reason, try to meet them in a 3rd country, somewhere at the Caribbean, i.e. where Venezuelans don't need a visa.

I have research this issue for several years. I'm not an expert, but I think the risk is very high for us. I haven't been there in 6 years and I would go only in case of health emergency, God forbidden. That is, I think, the only reason you can prove in the citizenship interview or at an US airport (with hospital papers, i.e.)

After you get your citizenship... that's another story, but we are vulnerable now.

I hope this helps you.
