I'm helping a not so computer savvy friend. However, I don't know beans about the citizenship process. But I can learn! Unfortunately she filed her N-400 one week too late to fall under the 6 month window. My goal is to save her the $500 she'd have to shell out for her renewal.

E is a PR 2003 applying for citizenship and her (known to me) dates are as follows:

10/03/03: PR
04/11/13: Priority date
05/10/13: FP
08/23/13: In line for Interviewing scheduling

E's green card expires on 10/03/13. I know it's unlikely that she'll get far enough into the process for her expiring green card to not matter. Is if there is anything she can do, outside of renewing her green card? I've read here and there about getting a passport stamped, but don't known if that applies to her as her PR status is from asylum.

My goal is to not only save her the $500 fee but the days and days she might spend in various offices trying to find these answers herself.

She can try for the I-551 stamp in her passport, but they'll probably refuse it because she filed N-400 with less than 6 months remaining on the GC. If she has a refugee travel document, she can get the stamp in it (if they'll agree to give her the stamp despite applying with less than 6 months on the GC). If she has a valid reentry permit, she won't need the stamp because a reentry permit by itself is acceptable for reentering the US even if the green card is missing or expired.

Does she have a Social Security card without the employment restriction? If not, she should visit a Social Security office with her green card (before it expires!) and apply for a new Social Security card which doesn't have the restriction. For employment she can show the unrestricted SS card combined with a driver's license or state ID, without having to show the GC.
