Green Card and Expired Passport

Hi all:
I am a US PR and my passport recently expired. If I don't travel outside of US, do I need to renew my passport , i.e., keep a valid, unexpired passport, in order to maintain my PR status?

Also, if I decided to apply for naturalization to become a US citizen after five years, do I need a valid, unexpired passport for the application, or is the expired passport suffice as the proof my prior citizenship?

Thanks,
Chris

No, you do not need a passport to maintain your status as PR.
You don't need a valid passport for naturalization.

I would disagree. You DO need a valid passport at the time of naturalization. You need the proof of date of birth, country of birth and prior citizenship. If you have other documents that proves those things, then well and good. Most people send copies of their valid passport to prove all those things. Additionally there is incidents of naturalization applicants being asked to show passport at the time of interview.

My suggestions.. Maintain a valid passport, no matter what. Ignore JoeF's advice, he is a software programmer from India, and has no bakcground in legal advices. Everything he says here is "blah blah blah".

Good advice. Although, simply because it is a matter of convenience, that does not make it mandatory to maintain a a valid passport in either case... but that is just my pig-headed logic speaking.

BTW, would you care to enlighten us as to why JoeF has no background in providing advice with respect to immigration law: because he is a software programmer, or because he is from India? From your post, I am somewhat confused on the issue. I do admire your store of information on other members' backgrounds though! Pity Herbert Hoover is no longer around looking for able assistance.
