Hello everyone,

Happy New 2010.

I need your input on this, so please don't hesitate to drop a line or two.

I came to the states under F-1 visa back in 07 and I was granted asylum back in July 09. I am now considering applying for Grad school and the dilemma I am having here is what is really my status is. I went over the applications and there are two options which are :

1) US citizen or permanent resident
2) International student.

I am neither one of them, if you happen to know the answer please let me know as I would appreciate your help on this one.

Thank you

While we're at it, do you know anything about FAFSA or anything? I'm thinking about going to Grad school in Fall. When do I need to apply for loans? I haven't picked my colleges yet.

Does anybody know how it all works for California? My dad filed for his taxes claiming me as his dependent last year. I'm not a resident of California yet and I'm planning on moving there soon. Does that entitle me to get in-state residency if I were to go to School this fall or will I need to live there for a year?

I am really not sure about the loans Walker..but I did live in California and in order to be a California Resident you will have to live there for at least a year and have Bills under your name and CA driving license..

Choose permanent resident: for education purposes, you are considered permanent resident...and that is for school purposes onle...good luck

It is always good to apply for loans in Jan. through the end of feb. If you apply for federal assistance during this period, you are assured to get the loan. If you apply after Feb. still you may get it but you are not guaranteed. Even if you are not sure which school to go or what time, it is always good to fill out the fafsa early. You have nothing to lose if you do. I don't know about private loans...

Your dad has made a big mistake in claiming you as dependent on his tax return while you were not there. As far as I know this only entitles a trouble for your father. And you will need to talk to the schools you want to go

Well I'm really confused. I went to midwest for school ( came here in F-1 visa ) while my dad resides in California. He did pay a hefty sum of my tuition. Just because I had a license from a state in the midwest doesn't mean a whole lot, does it?

Anyways, I'm moving to California this month, do you reckon he could claim me as a dependent or no?
