As far as I have seen, your lay off should not have an adverse effect on your GC. Just try to find a new job and you should be fine. Did you have any potential problem in mind?
As far as I can see there is also no problem on applying for unemployment benefits. Keep the layoff documents you get, in case somebody asks for them if you apply for naturalization later.
