got laid off within a month of GC approval, how does it affect citizenship

Hi,

I think I asked this before but still waiting to hear from people who were/are in a similar situation. How would it affect one's citizenship application if one gets laid off right within a month of GC approval (as happened in my case).

or can someone please point me to the thread where this has been discussed in detail.

Thanks in advance.

In general, there should not be any problem w/citizenship. Because in your case you were laid off. However, if you change job right after your green card and your green card was based on that job (e.g someone was granted GC based on his/her extraorinary ability in the field of Cancer but soon after aquiring GC he/she changed the job and started his/her own business). In this case USCIS can raise an issue. Personally I think if you stay in the same field, you will be fine.

Thanks hm11 for replying.

Some people suggest that wait till you complete 5years + 1 month on GC in such a situation (instead of applying right after completing 4 years and 9 months ).
Has anyone heard something like this before. What good would this wait do?

I would apply after 5 year. Are you employed now and are you in the same field?

yes.

But how 'applying after 5 yr' any different from 'applying after 4 yr+ 9 mths'

I am little extra careful in this matter. When you apply after 4 yr and 9 moths, they do look at the timing carefully and then again its my personal perception that they may ask you about job etc. There is a good chance that they may not even look at these things. It all depends on the examining officer. So use your best judgement and every thing will be fine.
I wish you good luck in this journey to CITIZENSHIP.

Thanks hm11 for the wishes. I guess i'll just apply after 4 yrs + 9 mths as otherwise it'll delay my husband's application for GC which i plan to file as soon as i naturalize.

what happen if you got laid off and have NOT worked at all during the five subsequent year as a young man/girl. You have the financial support from family. Would that raise a red flag?
