Got Laid Off on H1B Visa - Status Advise and options

Hi
  I got laid off about a month back and have been actively seeking employment. My VISA papers say it is valid for about 2 years from today. If my company does not notify INS, will my status be legal. What do INS require when I apply for my H1B, when I get another job.
Also, I have got an admission to graduate school to do Ph.D with an I20. Any one with experience on H1B to F1 Visa please post your experience. Thank you.

Go for Ph.D now!!!! You are accumulating your out of status days.

Apply for change of status now. From H-1b to F-1. You are out of status now. It it exceeds 180 days... you are finished (illegal alien) with this country.

How to get I-20?

Please guide me.
1) How much time it takes to apply for admission and getting I-20.
   Want to become a student just to save status.
2) Can Ph.D admissions be obtained year long or just in Spring & Fall.
