got H1 but on F1, what will be status as of Oct1st

my friend joined school back from January 2008,as he could not get his H1 filed while he was on OPT.

by luck he got H1 approved this year,
so as of now he is on F1 visa but what will be his visa as of Oct1st?

Also, what he has to do inform his school ISSS and his deparment?

please anyone who was in the same situation can pass me the information.
