I received my EAD in the mail last Tuesday, and today (thursday) I went to SSN office to apply for my first ss number. After I handed out all the documents needed the person helping me that the card might take 8 weeks because she couldn't verify my status/info in the system. What is the best way to do in this case? I even asked her if I have to call USCIS. She said that they will never answer my inquiry about this... but USCIS will answer them. Does this happen? Do i really need to wait for 8 weeks??? that suxxxxx... I need help! Please tell me your story, and what did u do about it???

Yes. You have to wait. Nothing else you can do... Many of us have been through this already, it should really be more like 3-5 weeks.

OMG!!! so i cant go to ssn office to follow up? or call them to follow up??? Is it possible to go to any ssn local office? or should i go to where i applied the original card?

"Hello, we are the US government and we are here to serve you... at some point in the future";)
I understand your frustration, but when it comes to these kind of things, the process just takes time. And since it is something out of your control, it is best not to get too wound up about it, it's bad for you heart.

I don't think you are that restricted. My wife is in the AOS process and she applied for a driver's licence. Here in FL they told us that you can do that as long as you bring them evidence of your status and your spouse will have to accompany you with the proof of US citizenship. It might be different in your state. Also, I think if you have the EAD you can start working by providing your potential employer proof of ss application and your EAD card. Hope I am right.

i checked the DMV website of my state. I have to bring my SS card to apply, even for ID :(

did they denied you the ss or you already applied and you have to wait?
is that is the case the next day after applied for it you can get a print out of the number with that and EAD you can apply for DL.
I am from KY here you SS and EAD to get DL.

That's true. It's the same here. But certain category of residents can be exempted from that rule if they qualify. In Florida you can't do anything without a car. So, they have some exeptions. For example, you can apply for a DV if you are a F-1 student.

You can call your DMV and ask them personally about it. Tell them you have your approval notice and all the forms. See if you can speak with somebody knowledgeable. You could make an appointment and get all your papers together and try to talk to them face to face. That's what I did. The only thing that might be different in our case is that my wife already had a temp dirvers licence that expired. Good luck to you.

Normally it take around 5-8 weeks. However, you must to be on top of it. Mine took forever and then I went to their office again, they told me they have lost my paperwork and I had to fill their forms again.
After the 2nd time it took around 10 weeks.

I got my EAD in the mail on a tuesday, and thursday of the same week I went to SSA office to apply for SSN. the person helping me told me that she couldnt verify my status/info in the system so it would take about 8wks for me to receive the card in the mail... that suxxxx... they have to verify with USCIS that my documents are valid...

for the SSN??? 10 weeks? OMG!!! this ssn is killing me... i dont understand why they couldnt verify it? dont they have the same (kinda) system? or atleast synchronized system??? facebook, and myspace have better system than the government. why dont they just hire those people... LOL

that's really weird if you have the EAD and some id for you to show them I don't understand why they don't provide you with one already.
what state are you from?

I am in upstate ny. when i applied for my ssn, all i needed to show was my ead card, birth certificate and passport. it took 5 mins, i dont remember her saying anything about veryifying my status with uscis, ur ead card should of been proof enough of that. 2 days later i even got to go back to office and she wrote down my ssn number for me, seens i needed it for job hunting and DL. Good luck with yours, hope u hear something soon. Kinda hard to do things without it.

Yes i went right away, i recieved my ead on the 22nd august, friday. then on the monday, 25th aug i went to my local ss office and applied for ss#. You were saying something about not being in the ssa system, i didnt understand that. your not going to be in the system until the person at ur ss office takes all ur details and puts u into the computer to apply for ur ssn. hopefully ull be able to find out something when u go thursday, goodluck.
