Given Name Surname mix up in passport under spouse name

Hi,

My Mother in law recently got her passport and we got an interview date at the US consulate in Chennai for early December. After taking the appointment she noticed that the my Father-in-law's name under spouse name has the Given name and Surname switched. Her actual name in the passport is written fine. The person preparing the passport has switched the surname and the given name in the Spouse column.

Example: Spouse Name should be <First Name> <Given Name> But instead it is printed as <Given Name> <First Name> .

Question: In this case is it necessary to go back and change the spouse field in the Passport or is it enough if we just update DS156 of my Father in law to reflect the other names used as <Given Name> <First Name>.

Could some one clarify if they had the same situation and what they did? Appreciate the help as I read somewhere that they would reissue a new passport booklet and that might potentially cause us to reschedule the appointment and further delays.

Spouse Name field confusion

After my posting yesterday, I spoke with to a customer service rep at VFS over phone and the lady explained that the spouse name field can have the legal name in any order <Surname Givenname > or <Givenname Surname>. She explained that as long as all applicants have their names recorded correctly in their passports Front page which has their Surnames and First names in two Separate lines, you are ok. You need to have those names written the exact same way into your visa form DS156.

Also, I am planning to ask my mother in law to get a sworn affadavit to claim the different names my father in law goes by so that incase of any confusion in the spouse name field, she can show that as proof. She doesn't have a marraige certificate so the need to have an affidavit. Hope all goes well. Will post any updates so that it helps future applicants.
