Getting a passport using the Child Citizenship Act

Hi,

I'm planning to get the passport for my minor son (he's LPR) using the Child Citizenship Act of 2000.

In the State Department website, the requirements are clear:

1) Proof of the child''s relationship to the American citizen parent. For the biological child of the American citizen this will be a certified copy of the foreign birth certificate (and translation if not in English).

2) The child''s foreign passport showing the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services in the Department of Homeland Security (BCIS) I-551 stamp in the passport, or the child''s permanent resident card (green card);

3) Proof of identity of the American citizen parent(s)

4) Passport application, passport photographs and fees.

My question is:

Do I only have to SHOW my son's documents or do they need to KEEP originals with them? Do they accept photocopies?

Since it has been so difficult to get his documents, I don't like the idea to loose his passport with the I-551 stamp. :mad:

Please, share your experience with me,

Thanks,

Maribel.

Hi maribelf
You need to send every thing in original to get the 1st US passport. But don't worry it is very safe and they will return every thing with the new US passport. As for as I know they do not accept photocopies.

Make a photocopy of I-551 stamped page for yourself.
