GC question

Hi, I have an approved EB2-niw with PD of Dec 2008. However as I am from India, there is a backlog with dates as back as Feb 2005.
My question is that do I need to have a job in research for all the time till I get my GC. The reason is that my job is getting over and it might be tough to get a job immediately. Can I be on H4 visa for some time till I don't get a job. Also if I need to maintain H1B then can I take up a lower paying or lower title job in research considering the job market. Can my husband extend his H1B beyond his 6 year time based on my approved I-140.
 
In my opinion, since NIW don't need a job offer you should be safe. The argument is that even though you want to work, you can't because you don't have valid status. (I must say I'm not a Lawyer). However I heard that if you are not occupied in the area that you say you are an expert(in NIW petition), your GC gets rewoked. Can anyone else comment on that.

Anyway I saw some where in trackitt saying that it all visa catagories will become current in this september ( because visa backlogg and bad economy made many people to go elsewhere). I am not sure about the reliability of that information. Does anybody know any thing about that
