GC holder visiting Canada

I understand GC holder visiting Canada need not obtain a Canadian visa.

I've read somewhere that a GC holder may visit Canada (enter Canada and return to US) *WITHOUT* a passport. Is this true?? (ie. all you need to carry is your green card). If so, can someone provide with link/quote of "official" law regarding this? (both on Canadian side, and US side)

What if I pose the same question about Mexico (instead of Canada)?

Thanks

I went to Vancouver, BC a few weeks ago by road. I only showed by PR card when entering Canada as well as the United States. No passport required although I brought it with me (always do when I travel; habit from H1 days).

FYI, a colleague visited Canada with here family a few weeks later. They only showed drivers liscence. Try the latter for fun if you are white and then show your green card if asked for proof of residence.

Rgds,
sadiq

what a relief right now, phew .... :p

p.s.
in hib days back 5 months ago, i drove back from canada, i handed in my passport with advance parole (of course, the big envelop was always ready), and the officer just handed it back to me and said "drive carefully"
