I am a permanent resident. I am getting married to H-1 Visa holder (teacher) in US. Can I sponser her for green card immediately after getting married? If so, would she be able to get employment authorization card and start working using this permit instead of H-1. I do not want her to be on H-1..in case of layoffs...etc... Please reply.

You can apply immediately but it takes 5-6 years for spouses of green card holders to obtain a green card. They will also have to maintain a valid legal status in the US while the application is pending.
She will not get EAD/AP any time soon, will take 4-5 years. THe process is you first file I-130 with BCIS. WHen it is approved and priority date is current you file I-485 along with EAD/AP. It takes 5-6 years for the priority dates to become current.
