GC holder marrying a F1 visa holder

I am a GC holder getting married to a F1 Visa holder.
Does she need to maintain F1 until she gets green card or she can change her visa status.

I am a Green Card holder and filed I-130 on February 2001 so I can benifit from 245i on behalf of my spouse. All I have received is the notice of Recipt from INS Texas center. It has been over 10 months. Do you know if I receive the approval letter anytime soon? I do know that the visa will not be ready for 4-5 years, but how do I ever know that the application is approved? Would they send me anything before the actual visa is available? Thanks.
