GC for U.S. citizen's parent

I am a naturalized U.S. citizen residing in Northern VA and am sponsoring my mother for permanent residency. My mother arrived here on a tourist visa. The paperwork for her Green Card for her was mailed to Chicago in late October. I received two receipt letters from USCIS on Nov. 12 with a "MSC" number. One receipt was for the I-485 application and the other for the I-130 application.

I was wondering if anyone can provide a timeline for this process? How long does it usually take to receive the Green Card? Also, as we have received the receipts from USCIS, is it okay for my mother to stay in the US till she receives the Green Card? Her I-94 expires in Jan 2006.

Thanks!
Vivek

She can stay as long her I-485 is pending. If she wants to travel outisde the US for a short period of time she needs an Advance Parole.
MSC means the location that processed your package "missouri service center".
For timelines, you can check out at www.uscis.gov at processing dates at the district office that corresponds where you live. Check under I-485 applications.
Or make a search over this forum, this questions has been posted/answered many times. In general depends on your district office and can take from 3,6 to 15 months.
Good luck,
