GC, Divorce and Citizenship

I came to the US as an F1 (1995) to do my Ph.D. in Genetics. At that point I was married and my wife was initially an F2. Then she got a job and an H1B and her company sponsored her green card process. I entered the GC process as her husband. Before getting the GC, I graduated and I used my OPT year and then I got an H1B from University of Nebraska. During this time I got divorced (back in our country where we got married) in June 2000, before the GC was granted. We got the GC approved in September 2001. I wonder if by applying for citizenship now, they will give me problems with this issue. I'm currently working as a Senior Scientist at University of Illinois and have a clean record. Any ideas and/or recommendations?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

It sounds like you want to talk to a lawyer. Remember, the folks on this list generally talk from personal experience, not any particular expertise.

I agree with Flydog.

The big question to me is how did you get your greencard in Sept 2001 when were divorced in June 2000. Is that even allowed?

So, to me the question has nothing to do with Naturalization. It has to do with whether your greencard is valid. Best to talk to a lawyer.

Sounds to me like your GC may have been obtained under fraudulent circumstances - you are supposed to tell USCIS when there are material changes to your application! Go see a lawyer ASAP.
