GC approved. Never filed AC21. Will that cause a problem

I filed my I-140 and I-485 in June 2004. After a week, I got laid off. Since GC is for a future employment, I guess "leaving the sponsoring company before 180 days" should not be an issue. Correct???

My GC got approved in July 2007. However, I never filed AC21. Do I need to go and work for my sponsoring company.

PS: A lot of people on these forums have stated that you don’t need to actually file AC21. They say that the you used AC21, you just did not inform USCIS. How far is this true???

A USCIS memo states that you are expected to inform them that your intent changed. A lot of people who became permanent residents in 2001-2002 never did that and were able to become citizens without difficulty (see a recent poll related to this matter).

I am currently talking to a lawyer regarding this and she suggests that I file AC21 before I file my naturalization papers.
