Yesterday, I went for stamp in San Diego and stood in line from 5.30am. When my turn came, the officer sent me out to get a copy of my ID (pp shud be good enough). Thankfully a store was open that early at 7am. Ofcourse she gave me a referral to return but still I lost out on a few token numbers and I could have finished the process much earlier if I had everything before hand.

Before i got my pp stamp I checked different web sites and find out that we better bring original + photocopies of all documents.
That really help b/c what ever she asked me I gave her photocopy.
I gave her my paystub and other things too which i dont remember.
Since I had photocopies she just ask for photocopies and i have all my originals :).

i went trough the same thing even tho i had a copy of my DL the officer wanted to get a copy for me (they do have copy machines) but i told her .. hey i brought u one myself .... it was under all the papers .. so i guess it depends on the officer .. even tho the rule is "u must bring your own copies"

Wow, you must have had a difficult officer. Ours didn't ask for anything, even I-94s. But she did collect them once they fell out of our passports as she went to do the stamping. (I took everything, APs, old I-94s, EADS, notices, and brought them all back home with me!) Stamped at SFO office.
