Today Senate members have agreed to reduced the number of H visas ans unskilled worker category, because due to haste to create a draft bill, the impact of these category was overlooked...they are simply saying it bring in too much workers along with their families, and also dislpaced skilled American jobs.....I see trouble down the road as this bill is shaping up much better for Congress members. It gaining momentum and it seems there will be a final bill out of conference...Have your say.

Not H1B

My understanding is that the new 'unskilled' visa total will be cut. The provisions to increase H1-B (and immigrant visas for that matter) are still in the bill.

140k to 450k? Is this right?

Am I reading it right?
So if this bill passes, cap goes from 140k to 450k.
Isnt that supposed to be good news for skilled workers in Eb2 and Eb3

If Tittle V of this Bill goes through we will not have trouble down the road.

Huh...

I searched the whole article for a word called Legal and found 0 instances. How pity is that ?

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/05/17/immigration.ap/index.html

I hope they speed up the process to take care of these illegal folks. The last thing that can happen is, the govt wants to convert these illegals into vote banks.I have read somewhere that the # of people who cross the border has increased thinking that something like an amnesty is going to be passed in the senate. And that is the reason that they want to build a meaningful border with Mexico.

I know this govt is not foolish to ignore us and give them "so called amnesty" ahead of us.But without proper voice and representation, no one is going to talk about legal immigrants waiting in the system.Even if the govt says everyone application gets processed right now, we LOST.

My 2 cents..

Can you please explain to me how "we lost" if the EB quota goes to 450,000, with dependents not being counted? "We" (EB1/2/3 without unskilled) will receive approximately 100,000 additional visa numbers per year plus dependents don't get counted. Do the math dude. "We" do not lose under this bill.

We 'lose' only because there will be 2 standards in the immigration system.
This morning I was watching the senate proceedings and Sen Vitter mentioned of a loophole in the Bill which allows an illegal alien to prove that he has employment simply by writing his own letter and signing it! Duh! Smells like fraud don't you think? Why can't we also just write up our own affidavits to swear that we all got jobs?

But anyway, Sen Cornyn's amendment to prevent self-petitioning for the illegals just passed narrowly recently... so good... no easy path for those people.

I agree...

I saw this today too... this should take care of the concerns mentioned in this thread.

Dammit... I said too soon...
This morning Sen Kennedy made a counter amendment to Sen Cornyn.
Specifically, it now allows H2C workers to self-petition their GC after the
Labor Certification phase.
Dammit dammit dammit.

What is this "Cornyn Amdt. No. 3965 As Modified; To modify the conditions under which an H-2C nonimmigrant may apply for an employment-based immigrant visa."
http://senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/vote_menu_109_2.htm

Does this mean Mr. illegals are going to take a share on Legal pie, if yes do they specify how much?

Originally, H2C workers could make self-petition for Green Cards.

Yesterday, Senator Cornyn made an amendment to REMOVE self-petition as an avenue for the H2C workers to get GC... in other words, they have to get Employer sponsorship like most of us here.

This morning, Senator Kennedy did a counter amendment to Cornyn... he wants to allow H2C to be able to self-petition only AFTER the Labor Certification phase. This amendment was passed.

Summary: Cornyn is against special treatment for H2C while Kennedy is for.

I don't know if they take up visa numbers from the EB1 to EB3 categories or they will get their own.
