From the stamp to GC

Hey everybody, it's nice to be a part of this community :D.

Unfortunately most of us here because somebody is giving us a hard time, but nevertheless it's nice to have helping hands in these stressing matters.

I am new to all the lingo, and a lot of you have such an organized journaling, way more organized than some of the people taking care of our document processing, it even feels intimidating a little :p .
Anyway, I got stamped with I-551 in my passport on October 27th, 2006 in Federal Plaza (NYC). After 2 interviews and an appointment after that, our DOA stamped my passport. We got married in July 04, applied in 2 weeks after that, first interview was in March 05 and then had Stokes interview scheduled in September 06, at which he told us he'll let us know what to do. We got a letter in 2 weeks at which time mailbox in the building was broken into, but luckily mailman did not put that letter in after he saw the security of the whole mailbox was compromised. I had a feeling the letter came and was really worried because of mailbox troubles, but we fortunately got it and it required us to come October 27th, 2006 (less than in 6 weeks). In that letter he required us to bring some more paperwork and one of the things he required was to renew my passport.

Well my passport was expired because I haven't left for over 5 years, but it takes 3-4 month to renew it in my country (Azerbaijan) through my embassy in Washington. I did not do it before because I was not planning to leave the country anytime soon, it was never mentioned to me by officers and embassy of my country until March 06 only extended them for GC holders for one year. To get a brand new one I had to fly myself back there, which I couldn't do for few different reasons. By March- April 06 I was not risking on sending my expired passport away before my interview. Thankfully my Dad raised all the connection he had locally in Azerbaijan and after my old passport literally went over the Atlantic ocean three times because of bureaucratic procedure problems, I received my passport through a person (it can not be sent over mail directly but to an embassy) that was flying in to Chicago and Priority overnighted it to me in NYC on a day before interview. Pheeewww, goodness, it's like I was a part of James Bond suspense sequence.

So thankfully all that did not go in vain and our DOA put the stamp the next morning. When he handed me the passport my wife was all jumping happy behind me and couldn't wait to see it. He also mentioned to me of course - This is good for work and travel and you will get your permanent card in 6 to 8 month but probably much sooner.

That was on October 27th, 2006. In November 06 I went to change my SSC because it had that INS authorization required writing. After 3 month of nothing I've got a letter from SSA saying that Homeland security could not determine my status as a PLR. Ok, I wasn't surprised that much, I guess I gotta wait until I get the GC itself. Few days ago on April 5 I called 1800.375.5283 to check up on things. The lady told me that my case is still pending for approval and it stated that there was request for additional documentation on October 27, 2006 (that I fulfilled by the way). She gave me a confirmation number and told me that I will be contacted in 45 days about the status of my case. It's like my case wasn't even updated since October 06? I know it haven't been 6-8 month yet, but we all know in these matters we have to Always be proactive.

So my fellow immigration peoples, you guys have any idea or experience on how long does it take to get that coveted Welcome notice and GC after the I-551 IR-6 stamp? I have a feeling that me being from a country that is bordering Iran and having Azeri/Persian name is automatically setting off alarms in homeland office :( ; but of course I hope that's not the case.

P.S. Thank you for reading my stereotypically-longer-than-necessary-newbie post :D

If you got I-551, then your case should have been approved. You should make an infopass appointment at your DO and go talk to them. Seems odd to get the stamp and not to promptly get the Green Card. If you hadn't passed FBI namecheck you shouldn't have got the stamp.

Just an update since April

Hey guys,

Well, not much progress still, my stamp is about 3 month from expiration and they still did not send me GC. I went to my district office already twice and called the USCIS national number second time on July 1 (after waiting more than 45 days). Local office told me to wait 4-5 weeks, national 45 days, twice already.

At least now I know what is going on, taking from their words. Last Thursday when I've been in 26 Federal Plaza (NYC DO) the officer was honest at least, he said that our officer that gave me the stamp, did not do all of his work that he was supposed to. Now they have to get the file from Missouri Center to review it and then clear me in the system, because my case there is still listed as pending but I have IR-6 I-551 in the passport. He saw that we came earlier (June 1) and said that the other officer already requested our file (on June 6th) and he can not request it again, it takes at least 3 weeks.

Well 3 weeks been gone, does it take 3 weeks just to find it? I don't know about other people, but when it comes to my case, the time estimations they give me are way off whack. Now I am wondering how else I can hurry them up, I don't like just sitting and waiting. If I did not start bothering them even before their "estimated" 6 month time of arrival of my GC, I wouldn't have find out that I am still pending in the system instead of approved. Sheesh! Didn't they just hire bunch of more people to be better organized, or that just made the bureaucracy worth?!

Cheers,
Q

Well I finally got some good new. Got a letter today stating that my card went into production 26th of July and I should be getting it in 30 days, woohoo! After that I can finally get my SSC back and get some other things out of the way. By the way any other good things I should know of now that I am finally a cleared resident?

Good luck to everybody else and I'll be back with an update (even if only 2 people reading it :) )when I get the card itself, which should be before the August's end. :p

So I got the welcome letter, that's great...one thing bothers me though. On welcome letter in Notice type section among other things it says
COA: CR6 - that's conditional status
My stamp in the passport has handwritten IR6 by officer, me and my wife were married 2 years and 4 month at the date of my I-551 stamp...
After doing some search on the forum and reading particularly on this topic http://www.immigrationportal.com/showthread.php?t=242277&highlight=COA I realize that I am not special...so I will wait for the card and fill out the I 90 form, it seems that paperwork just doesn't end for us.
