My lawyer finally got around to update me on our I-485 freeze and I quote "...INS just told us last Friday that there is in fact a freeze on processing I-485's. We don't know how long it will last, but the INS has orders not to approve any cases until the background checks are complete. There is a large backlog of these checks to be completed and they are currently processing the naturalization background checks first. This means, according to our local office, that I-485's are on hold right now..."
