From OPT to Green Card

Hi, Folks,

I am in my optional practical training (OPT) period for half a year. I got another half a year to finish my OPT. I am considering applying H-1 visa after I use up my 1-year OPT. My question is:

Can I just ask my employer to start the green card application for me during my OPT period?
