From J1(au pair) visa to F1 status

Regards to everyone at this forum. I am currently on J1(au pair,no 2 year res. req.) visa and in process to get enrolled in CUNY college and change my status to F1. My concern is...from the moment I apply to USCIS for change of status to F1, can I leave the au pair program and start with classes or I still have to maintain the status working as au pair and wait for an approval letter and than begin with the school. If anyone has or had similar experience, please help with your advice. Thank you guys !
 
Did u ever get to figure this out?

My friend from the ukraine is in the same situation as you.
and would like to know if this worked out for you? and if you were able to stay in legally here.
