From J-1 to B-2 Visa, Possible??

Hello,

I am currently in the USA with a J1 Internship Visa ending in June 2010.
I would like to spend some time traveling around the USA for at least 6months.
I went on the USCIS website. Should I apply for a B2 visa with the application named: "I-539,Application To Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status" ? Or should I fill up some other application forms? Should I go back to France?

Or am I totally wrong and I should do something different? I am totally lost

I would appreciate any help, advice, link.

Thank you very much!

Are you subject to the 2-year rule?
If yes, you cannot change your status while you are in the US. This is written on the back of your DS-2019. You will have to go back and apply for the B1/B2 visa.
If no, you should be able to change your status while you are in the US. I don't have experience on this.

Extension of stay

Hello,

I am on J-1 and my wife is on J-2. We are subject to the two year rule. The end date on our visas is the 21st of May, 2011. Given the one month grace period, this gives us time till the 20th of June, 2011. We wish to stay beyond that date, but I have read that changing to a B-2 visa would require us to move out of the country and apply at a consulate abroad.

I wish to know if there is ANY WAY to extend our stay in the USA without having to leave?

I eagerly await a reply. Thank you very much.

Abhiram.

Talk to your J1 program visa officer and ask him to extend your guys DS-2019. You do not need to extend your J1 visa, just extend your DS-2019.
Or, you two may switch to another J1 program and get DS-2019 from them. Valid DS-2019 will allow you to keep stay in US.

Some immigration lawyers will give you advises for $100 per 30 min or so. They may be able to give you more ideas.

thanks kitten, i think you are right, i mean trinitty y guys really face a big problem. Go to Immigration specialist lawyer and try to solve it quick
