Hi, im new to the site and I need help....my friend and I want to go on a cruise and she doesnt have her green card. Her mother and stepfather who are legal US citizens live in the country as well as her. She is still waiting for her green card and she doesnt know if she can go on the cruise since it goes out of the United States. The bahamas to be precise. If anyone could lend some insight to me that would be great. Thank you. Email me at FirePyro89@gmail.com....I NEED IT SOON!

but.......

She doesnt have her greencard. Her mom applied for it and it is taking a loooooong time to get it....what is the AP? I dont know any of this. Is there anything else that she can show?
Thanks for the input. :o

If your friend is in adjustment of status and is still pending she must get an Advance Parole (AP) that is the travel document for adjustees. If she already got approved then she must wait for her green card itself to be able to travel. But you said that is taking so long so I don't know in what status she is at? How old is she?

To enter the Bahamas you need the green card unless you are one of the countries that does not need it and you need it to re-enter the US anyway.

well your friend will have to get an AP to travel to the Bahamas as it's considered international waters, she will have to file the I-131 form. It also depends on if your friend has maintained her status. i.e. she hasn't been out of status for more than 180 days. otherwise she'll get a 3/10 year ban and will be inadmissable. however, if she has been fine then she can apply for AP. if she has already had her green card approved and is just waiting for it to come in the mail, then i don't think she can apply for AP.

ok

She has only been here for 1 year. They told her that it would take about 4 months to get the green card.....yea right. So, I dont know if she is approved or what. Is there a way to check the status of the green card? If not, how does she apply for the AP? Thanks for ALL of your help.

Not-so-smart question: IS SHE AT LEAST 18?

If she is, then she should know how to check her own case status, there is no way for her not to be involved in the Adjustment of Status (AOS) process without her signatures if she is 18+ years old.

She can check her case status online at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website, http://www.uscis.gov/, by entering her receipt number. Though the information provided on the USCIS website may be lacking, she can consider making an InfoPass appointment to visit her District Office (DO). Speaking about DO, if she moved after she file, then she should have notified USCIS. If she moved and didn't notify USCIS, the entire case might be tossed out; the officers would have beyond reasonable doubt that it could be a fraudulant application because the mail is being returned to USCIS.

It sounds like she is not as concerned about her status as you are.

If there is a person that is as irresponsible as not knowing the necessary steps to maintain his/her status in the US, then may God help him/her.

Good luck.
