Frequent Travel between Canada and US with Canadian PR and American AP

Hi all,

I am a Canadian Permanent Resident and have my Adjustment of Status pending in the US. The time on my Canadian PR is running out and I would like to settle in Canada and work in the US for at least the next few months (I'd like to see if I get stuck in Name Check with my 485).

- I'd like to know if any of you have had problems frequently crossing the border (about twice a week) using the Canadian PR card to get into Canada and AP to get into the US.
- Will either visa officer have a problem with my maintaining my PR status in both countries?

Thanks in advance.

You could face problems - depending on the officer at the POE. The possibility of the loss of one of the PRs cannot be ruled out. See this recent thread:

Zima/bigboy, I read thru the thread. It seems the guy made a mistake by declaring himself as US GC holder rather than as a Canadain PR at the Canadian border.
If you use PR to enter Canada and AP to enter US, what would be the issues?
Using AP does not cancel your H1, so technically you are still on H1 status which you may have to declare to the Canadian officer.
As long as one has a valid AP and everything else is in order, the US officer should allow the AP holder in too, I would guess.
I am basically in the same situation too, waiting for my AP to travel back to Canada with my PR. Would love to know the experiences, opinnions of others too. Thanks

AP/PR Experience

Hi Deba,

After I posed this question, I've travelled multiple times to Canada (Windsor) using my PR and my expired H1 visa stamp to the US without any problems (I had my AP as backup). My wife who does not have an H4 but only the AP was questioned the first time when she had her AP stamped but after that it has been a breeze. The canadian folks do not usually ask about status in the US, and if you show them the PR card they usually let you in without any hassles.

I was never asked my status in the other country during my visits, but if someone does ask you, I think you should be fine. Just make sure you're keeping up with the requirements for each of the statuses.

Zima
