FP2 and approval dates are very much related. The case can be approved only when the FP did not expire.
It is still debatable if doing early FP helps or not - it may help when the officer picks up your case and is ready to approve, but the FP is not updated. Going for a late FP may help for the 1st FP because it gives more time for the 1st Fp to expire.
The FPs are generated manually and also automatically - go figure yourself. That is the reason why USCIS generated a bunch of 3rd FPs recently.
